I love a good-vibes house.
And my sister-in-law Elizabeth has created one.
She has made such a beautiful home for her family. When it comes to actually making a house feel like home, Elizabeth has such a gift.
She has an eye. She knows where things belong. She has this really beautiful palette and a way of making everything feel clean and comfortable without making it feel untouchable. It feels lived in. It feels welcoming.
And I really admire that in people because I don’t think everybody knows how to turn a house into a home.
Not every house is a home.
I go into plenty of houses that have all the things. They have furniture. They have pictures on the walls. They have decorations and beautiful rooms, and everything is technically where it’s supposed to be.
But something is missing.
Because I don’t think a home is actually made out of any of those things.
A home is made out of warmth.
It’s made out of compassion and acceptance. It’s kindness in the air. It’s the echoes of little voices—and sometimes very big voices—coming from another room. It’s animals running around. It’s people laughing in the kitchen.
It’s knowing you can open the refrigerator. It’s knowing where your favorite blanket is. It’s having your own room and your own artwork and your own weird little things exactly where you want them.
It’s knowing, I belong here.
I think everybody deserves a sanctuary like that. A place you can always come back to. Somewhere you know you can rest, eat, regroup, recharge, and just be.
And that’s what Elizabeth has created for these kids.
Today, I could actually feel how relaxed they are in their home. They’re excited to show off their rooms. They have their own spaces and their own artwork and their own styles. They’re getting to express who they are inside the place where they live.
And after the year they’ve had, that means something.
For about a year, they lived at my parents’ house. And my parents have a beautiful home, so this isn’t about where they were living being bad. It simply wasn’t theirs.
They were living out of boxes. Their things weren’t necessarily where they wanted them. Their artwork wasn’t on their walls. There was this unsettled energy because their lives were, quite literally, unsettled.
And now?
They’re home.
You can feel the difference.
There is this honest-to-God exhale when you’re over there now.
They’re settled.
They’re sturdy.
They’re home.
And I think that’s what I’ve realized: sometimes what makes a home so special isn’t how beautiful it is. It’s the fact that it’s yours.
Your stuff.
Your animal.
Your room.
Your people.
Your friends coming over after school.
Your family gathering in the kitchen.
Your artwork on the wall.
Your mess.
Your memories.
Your life happening inside of it.
Elizabeth’s sister was there today with her husband, and there was just this wonderful feeling of family throughout the house. And now Elizabeth is going to host Thanksgiving there, which I am so freaking excited about.
I cannot wait.
Because this already feels like the kind of house that is going to collect memories.
Thanksgivings. Birthdays. Sleepovers. Family dinners. Friends walking through the door without knocking. Animals underfoot. Kids getting older. Laughter coming from rooms down the hall. Probably arguments, too. Tears. Hard conversations. Celebrations. Ordinary Tuesdays.
Life.
That’s what makes a house a home.
And this house already feels special to me because it wasn’t just decorated beautifully.
It was made with love.
It was made with honor, kindness, integrity, and compassion. There is real, honest, unconditional love inside that home, and you can feel it when you walk through the door.
Today, I got to feel it.
And I think that’s why I left feeling so happy.
After everything, they finally have a place where they can put their things down and know they don’t have to pick them back up again.
They have a roof over their heads that is their roof.
They have rooms that are their rooms.
They have a place for friends and family to gather.
They have somewhere to retreat when the world feels like too much.
They have somewhere to celebrate when life feels wonderful.
They have somewhere they belong.
They have a home.
And what a beautiful thing it is to watch the people you love finally exhale and realize:
We’re home.
