Give the Alligators Their Flowers

Today has been such an amazing day.

Hudson came over, we had coffee, we hung out, and then we went on a nice walk down to the park in my neighborhood. It was such a beautiful morning.

The vet was coming to see Bill sometime between ten and two. While we were walking, I got a text saying they’d be there in about thirty or forty minutes, so we set a timer.

We made a TikTok in front of the water, sat on the swings, took in the sun, and just enjoyed the vibe of this beautiful fall energy.

And then we had to run back to my house.

The vet got there before we did, so I rushed inside and got Bill into the bathroom. I had to trick him, which is the worst feeling. Then they went straight in after him.

Apparently, he immediately went vertical.

Like, VERTICAL.

I’ve seen him do it. It is incredibly athletic and agile of him. Kind of crazy to witness, actually. But they said he was terrified, and I hate that part.

Hudson and I waited outside. The noises are just the worst.

Afterward, we talked about ways to make the next visit less stressful for him. The vet also brought up something I hadn’t really thought through: getting Bill comfortable with a carrier.

If we ever had to evacuate, God forbid, or if he got hurt and I needed to take him somewhere, I would need to be able to get him into it. And it would be so much better if the carrier didn’t already feel terrifying.

So that’s something we’re going to work on. The vet discussed some calming options with me, too.

He doesn’t see the Bill I see when it’s just the two of us. With me, Bill isn’t this anxious little guy. The whole doctor situation is still pretty new to him.

But I will definitely do whatever I can to calm his energy and soothe his nerves.

Then, once that was over, Hudson and I went on an amazing, fabulous golf cart ride.

We went all over the neighborhood, looked at different things, saw some people’s homes, and stopped by my mom’s house. She had just gotten home from doing the flowers at church.

She and Hudson got to talking about the alligators around Kiawah, the development nearby, and their concern about where all those animals are going.

And after we left, I kept thinking about how sad it is to imagine animals getting displaced by all the construction around Charleston.

Somehow, we got onto islands with monkeys and islands with horses, and I was like: why not an alligator island?

For real. That would be pretty nice of us.

These animals have been here for so long. We need to give them their flowers.

Give the alligators an island.

Well, then we started laughing, and naturally, it became a comedy bit.

Alligator Island: the place where, in this completely ridiculous scenario, we send all the pedophiles and the really, really bad people who are harming others.

And then we see how long they last.

Who knows? Maybe they live there forever. Either way, they’re getting a different kind of life, the alligators are getting their island, and my brain has decided this is a win-win.

Alligator Island. Saving lives and saving species.

And then, of course, I started thinking about the reality show.

Put cameras around Gator Island and see what happens. It’s a dog-eat-dog island. Or, really, an eat-the-alligator-or-the-alligator-eats-you type of jam.

A little comedy skit. A whole ridiculous bit that came out of a golf cart ride.

Alligator Island. Here we come.

Great day with Hudson. Great walk. Great golf cart ride.

Great day in general.
